Richard O. Gates, Attorney Chesterfield, VA
Richard O. Gates has nearly 50 years of extensive legal experience. Having spent the early part of his legal career as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in both the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County, and going on to serve as a Bankruptcy Trustee for approximately a decade, and as a Commissioner in Chancery for Chesterfield County for 30+ years, he is extremely knowledgeable in a wide variety of legal matters
Richard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, completing a tour in Nuremburg Germany and Vietnam, before being honorably discharged in 1969. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and his J.D from the T.C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond. Richard was admitted to the Virginia State Bar on January 30, 1974.
After his years as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, Mr. Gates began his private practice in the summer of 1980. The grandson of the former Chesterfield County Sheriff, O.B. Gates, and nephew of Judge Ernest P. Gates, as well as a grandchild of the well-known Chesterfield Cogbill family who have been active in Chesterfield County legal circles for over 150 years, Richard chose to establish his practice in the county of Chesterfield where his family history is deeply rooted. Since the beginning of his private practice, he has expanded to serve a number of surrounding counties including Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Amelia, Powhatan, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Prince Edward and others.
